In 2013 in London, two terrorists ran over an off-duty British soldier named Lee Rigby, then jumped out of their car and hacked him to death with knives. 48-year-old Ingrid Loyau-Kennett was passing by on a bus, and seeing what she thought was an automobile accident, got off to render aid. On grasping the situation and seeing that Rigby was beyond help, she approached one of the killers, who was still holding a knife and a gun in blood-covered hands. Loyau-Kennett then engaged him and his accomplice in conversation calmly and even sympathetically, likely preventing them from killing more people before armed police arrived ten minutes later. Interviewed later in the Guardian, she said “I don’t think I did something courageous.”
