Why I Love My Husband

He still listens.

It’s that simple.

Tuesday night, he shared a comment with me as we were getting ready for bed.

“One of the girls at the party gave me this huge hug and thanked me.”

“What did she say?”

“She thanked me for listening to her.”

“The tall quiet one in the corner?”

I was so busy making waffles, I hadn’t noticed where my husband sat. We had hosted a baby shower for a young woman in my niece’s recovery program a few days earlier.

“She sat against the window at the small table. It was me, your sister, and another girl in the program. She said she had tried recovery before, but now she had found Jesus and she knew it would work this time.”

“It must not happen very often. You let her hug you.”

“It seemed like the right thing to do. She smiled.”

“You are such a good host.” I kissed him good night.

Then I realized it was the eve of our 37th wedding anniversary and I hadn’t done anything nice for him.

I promised, “I’m getting you flowers. You drove me to my meeting tonight, so you are done.”
