And so to invite this mystical liminality, Celtic people would, and many still do, host a ‘Dumb Supper’ (dumb in the deaf sense). For this, we set our dinner table with seats and servings for our family members and ancestors who have passed on. We eat in silence, to respect the fact that they no longer speak with words in this world. There is a reverence in the silence, an honouring that not only keeps their memory alive, but may even be a time when the particularly attuned feel their presence or receive messages.
