I work in social science research. and we average 1-4 new hires a year. Bad mgrs punch back verbally & shed team members like dandruff. The first 3 weeks of a job are critical. If staff aren't engaging openly during that time & giving them stretch projects that build their ability to fit into a team, the firm has lost them. They will be looking at 3 months, networking at 6 months, and out the door at 18 months. Mentoring should be done in groups no larger than 4.
