Great story except for the last line. Like you, I was terrified to drive and let my original license lapse. I broke out in a cold sweat any time I had to make a left hand turn. The only reason I retook the test was to improve my children's social life and opportunities for outside activities. I completely agree with the money waste for young drivers. That 7-9K could be used for education expenses, going abroad, or even rent.
